2002-05-21 Learning Difficulties and Classroom Accoustics

A 1999 study out of Ohio State University revealed that many classrooms have enough background noise and echoes to hamper language learning in children with minor hearing deficits. While adults can filter for poor accoustics in a room, young children -who are just learning language- have more difficulty. The comprehensive study found that only 2 of 32 schools in the study had acceptible accoustics.

Doctors may soon be able to diagnose - and start treatment for - dyslexia long before the age a typical child learns to read. A Georgetown Unversity study appears to show that dyslexics —who, by definition, have difficulties reading— also experience difficulties in processing visual motion and these difficulties likely could be tested for long before a child reaches the 'reading age' of 5 or 6.
