In fact, there is evidence that hard-of-hearing babies must be diagnosed and treated before 6 months of age to develop optimally. If a parent waits too long, it can have long-lasting negative effects. Consider this daunting statistic: according to a Utah State University study, children with hearing loss in just one ear are 10 times more likely to be held back a grade in school.
